• The UK independent record label archive •
Concentrating, initially, on the period from 1976-1981 and with a focus on ‘punk’ and ‘new wave’ oriented labels, the ildb has a simple aim – to create a detailed, highly searchable archive of the UK’s independent label scene from its explosion in the mid-70s up to – eventually - the present day.
From a label-centric perspective, the ildb will include artists, releases, label owners and key personnel, in addition to distributors, exporters, manufacturers, promoters and others that have played – and continue to play - a critical part in this vital sector of the UK music industry. Whereas other websites and print publications often just touch on labels as a side issue to the artists and releases, the ildb places them firmly at the centre of the picture. Part directory, part discography, part history book – the ildb will be the definitive archive of the UK independent label scene.
Much water has passed under the bridge since 1976 and many hundreds – if not thousands - of labels have already come and gone. Similarly, the independent record industry has, over the years, provided employment (or been an absorbing hobby) for a large number of people; some remain in the indie sector, some have moved to positions with majors, many have since left (or have never been formally involved in) the industry – they all have stories to tell. Increasingly, key people from the early period are leaving us for good, and – before it’s too late - we need to ensure that their input is not lost forever.
If you’ve played a part, the ildb wants to know your story – please get in touch.
Initial aims of the ildb include a relational database of all UK ‘new wave’ independent labels active from 1976-1981, with extensive discographies (including high resolution sleeve/label scans) and sound clips – with particular emphasis on those releases that have – for whatever reason – become hard to obtain. Future plans include a specialist download service offering full tracks, vinyl/CD reissues of selected catalogues, and a compilation series.
